Naca and his carrom boards

Tournament Carrom Board Nacanieli Moce, 65, comes a long way from his home in Mualevu, Vanubalavu to sell his work of art that leans against the giant Vai tree, which is a cause of admiration especially for the numerous boys who pass after school. His carrom boards come with a pack of dices and is well appreciated by one and all. Naca left his village to work in the city a few years back. Today a retired Public Works Department worker, he spends his day sitting on a log under a big tree along Grantham Road in Raiwaqa, selling carrom game boards, easytel telephone boxes and wooden money boxes which he makes at home.
His vidividi boards are a like a magnet which draw the attention of many passerby. His game boards costs about $45 and a pack of carrom dices about $5.
Making vidividi boards and carrom boards keeps the man busy and his carpentry skills are put to use since he cannot do planting as he has no land to plant on in the busy city suburb. He and his wife Melaia dwell in a housing settlement. The couples have two children who are now married and happily settled in their respective families.
Nacanieli is more than happy to earn some money from his carrom board sales and from that money he purchases food to meet their daily requirements. He starts working on the new game boards when the older ones are sold. He says that working on his own accord is the most ecstatic feeling because you are your own boss and you can work as you wish.
